The federal Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs Minister, Senator Nigel Scullion, says he is not examining a proposal to build a cruise ship terminal at Yarrabah, near Cairns, at this stage.

The local Indigenous council wants to build an $80 million jetty and is seeking financial support from private investors, as well as from the state and federal governments.

Senator Scullion says the proposal is not a priority.

“They acknowledge that perhaps we should be looking at some parallel programs that make some real difference today, and there are some infrastructure applications that I’m looking at very closely from Yarrabah at the moment but no I’m not examining the notion of building a ship facility on the other side of Yarrabah at this stage,” he said.
