Westpac is being roasted online after suffering a major outage in some of the busiest shopping weeks of the year.

The big bank confirmed the outage on Tuesday, as it said customers were experiencing intermittent issues with some online, mobile and telephone banking services.

“Our teams are working to fix the issue,” Westpac said on social media.

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience and will continue to share updates.”

Website Down Detector said nearly 3000 people across most Australian states had reported issues with Westpac’s online banking by 11.30am on Tuesday (AEDT).

The outage also hit customers of St George Bank, which is a part of the Westpac Banking Corporation. Customers of other Westpac subsidiaries, including the Bank of Melbourne, and BankSA, also reported issues.

People who had been left stranded at the tills took out their fury on social media.

“Westpac, you have to be joking. The only afternoon I can do my Christmas shopping and every transaction I try to make is failing although I have funds,” wrote one customer on X (formerly Twitter).

“Guessing no Christmas in this house this year? What a disgraceful situation to be forced into.”

Another furious customer said: “Westpac has done it again. No internet banking, No app, and no news from Westpac. Nice work (not) Westpac! Just when we need it the most.”

A third complained they couldn’t even log into their account.

“Another day, another shambles, Westpac,” they wrote.

“Whole system has crashed. Can’t log in or withdraw any cash. And there are mugs trying to tell you cash will be non-existent in three years. Obviously they don’t have a Westpac account.”

The bank has repeatedly apologised to customers via social media. But it has given no update on what is behind the problem or when it might be fixed.
