Snapped walking arm-in-arm with new wife Jasmine Yarbrough during their Aspen honeymoon on Thursday, Karl Stefanovic was asked how he’s feeling since being dumped as host of Nine’s Today show.

“I am looking forward to getting back to the sunshine,” Karl said, talking about returning to his Sydney home.

But Stefanovic, 44, may not be basking in the Australian summer for long, according to reports which claim Nine has approached him about becoming a US correspondent.

A network spokesperson told The New Daily that Nine is “not commenting on any speculation.” The network already has veteran Robert Penfold, Lizzie Pearl and Charles Croucher reporting from the US.

Assuming he’s willing to leave his three children in Sydney and relocate, would sending Karl to the States be a good move for Nine?

“I think so,” Peter Horgan, CEO of Omnicon Media Group told The New Daily.

“I read somewhere yesterday about a long rehabilitation for Karl’s brand, and I think if they’re willing to invest that, then being out of the limelight and out of the gossip columns for a while is probably the best path.”

Karl is under contract with Nine until around September next year. He is  the network’s highest-paid star, with reports he earns about $2 million a year.

Despite the change in Karl’s fortunes from Nine’s marquee star and Gold Logie winner to someone who Nine needs to find a project for, Stefanovic does have a job lined up already.

He’ll start filming the second series of This Time Next Year show in February.

The US gig could be a good fit for Stefanovic at this point when his ex-wife Cassandra Thorburn is still going public with stories about him, a Nine source told The New Daily.

“A move to a different country could take the heat off Karl. Absence could make the viewers’ hearts grow fonder,” the source said.

Meanwhile, two days after news director Darren Wick promised announcements soon about Today’s new lineup and format, the show named its first new face for 2019.

Indigenous Triple J newsreader Brooke Boney has signed up as the show’s new entertainment correspondent working alongside Richard Wilkins.

Yesterday she posted to Instagram about weather; today she is the face of a cultural upheaval at a flagship breakfast show.

Wilkins, 64, keeps his job as Nine’s entertainment editor but will have more of a presence on the second-tier Today Extra show with David Campbell and Sonia Kruger. It airs after 9am.

“It’s such an exciting time to be joining Nine and am looking forward to learn from everyone on the Today team,” Boney, 31, said.

“As a young girl growing up in the country I watched Today so it’s really awesome to know it’ll be my new home.”

Hailing from the Gamilaroj people Muswelbrook in northern NSW, Boney will be one of the few young Indigenous women on commercial Australian TV on a show which has traditionally lacked diversity.

She started Triple J broadcasts with “Yaama”, which translates to “Hello” in Gamilaroi.
