After almost 30 years, Kermit the Frog is getting a new voice.

Steve Whitmire has left his role as the voice behind the iconic Muppet.

Whitmire has voiced the character since The Muppets creator Jim Henson’s death in 1990.

A Muppets Studio spokeswoman said the long-time Muppets performer Matt Vogel would be taking over the role of Kermit.

Representatives for Disney, which owns Muppets Studio, did not immediately return a request for comment about the motivation behind the move.

In addition to Kermit, Whitmire had voiced grumpy critic Statler, Rizzo the Rat and other characters for The Muppets.

Kermit famously sung The Rainbow Connection, written for The Muppet Movie‘s opening number and reprised by the full cast at the end of the film.

It was later nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song in 1979.

The single reached No.25 on the United States Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart that year.
