Alex Baldwin and the Saturday Night Live team have taken a Christmas-themed swipe at President-elect Donald Trump in the comedy show’s final episode of the year.

The opening skit took aim at Mr Trump’s cabinet selections and his relationships with wife Melania and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Baldwin as Mr Trump admitted he had appointed Department of Energy Secretary Rick Perry to the post because he saw him on Dancing with the Stars – and enjoyed his “energy”.

“It’s just unpresidented”, said Mr Trump of Mr Perry – a jab at the businessman’s Twitter gaffe last week in which he misspelt the word “unprecedented”.

Kate McKinnon plays Kellyanne Conway, Mr Trump’s dedicated campaign manager who reveals she has handcuffed herself to the president-elect for eternity.

But the climax of the skit comes when a bare-chested Vladimir Putin slides down the president-elect’s chimney, complete with a sack of gifts – including a highly-suspicious elf doll the Russian president asks Mr Trump to keep next to his Internet router.

Mr Trump then apologises to the Russian for neglecting to get him a gift.

“Please, Mr. Trump, you are the gift,” Mr Putin replies.

Melania Trump did not escape ridicule, asking her husband of Mr Putin: “If a person you did not know came from a foreign country and just started flattering you, what would you do?” she asked.

“Marry them,” replies Mr Trump.

Unusually, the president-elect is yet to post a tweet about the episode.
