Daily Mail apologises to Sam Armytage over ‘granny pants’ story

Sunrise co-host Samantha Armytage has received an apology from the Daily Mail for publishing a story about her “granny panties”.

The Daily Telegraph has reported that not only did the Daily Mail amend the story to soften its tone, but “in a rare concession” also included an apology at the bottom of the article.

“An earlier version of this story contained critical statements regarding Samantha Armytage’s appearance,” the Mail story says.

“While the story has since been amended, we apologise for any distress caused to Ms Armytage or readers more generally.”

When it was first published, the story sparked outrage, with journalism commentators telling The New Daily that it plumbed new depths of gutter journalism in Australia.

It also led Armytage to engage lawyers who demanded the Mail retract and apologise for the article, or risk a defamation suit.

The story’s original headline read: “Sunrise host Sam Armytage dares to bare with granny panties showing a visible line as she steps out in Sydney … after slamming rumours she’s dating Channel Seven colleagues.”

The Mail later changed that to: “Casual Sunday! Sunrise host Samantha Armytage goes solo as she heads out on a shopping trip after slamming rumours about her dating life.”

A line in the piece which read: “The TV personality’s granny panties showed through the garment with a clearly visible line”, was also removed.
