Today Show host Lisa Wilkinson has labelled parents “crazy” for allowing children under the age of five to use screens such as tablets or laptops.

The mother of three, alongside co-hosts, Karl Stefanovic and Richard Wilkins, made the comment during a discussion about “the terrible twos” and how to deal with the difficult stage of parenting.

“If as a parent you allow your children time in front of a screen – you give them iPads, you give them phones – before the age of five … you are crazy,” she said.

Watch Lisa Wilkinson’s comments below:

“Come back to me when they’re 14 and completely and utterly addicted to their screens, they have no social skills – that’s when you’ll realise what you did early has come back to bite you.”

Many Australian parents were up in arms about Wilkinson’s views, suggesting she was out of touch.

“Screen time! Are you serious! Get with the times! This is 2016, technology is only getting more advanced,” one commenter wrote on Facebook.

“It’s impossible in this day and age to stop a child looking at electrical devices, seriously, they are everywhere!” said another.

“Yeah right well my daughter who is in KINDY has iPad time there … by the time she is in YEAR TWO she will need to have a tablet for school.”

However, some fans agreed with Wilkinson’s statement.

“I so totally agree with Lisa Wilkinson – we didn’t go through the terrible twos or threes or any other terrible year … we spent time with our child – and yes we both worked and still work. We ensured that it was quality time … If you don’t teach kids the rights things from the day they are born you are going to have issues later in life,” one said.

“I don’t believe small children should be placed in front of TVs or given tablets/phones to distract them for the sake of the parents needs,” another added.
