Twelve TV shows you probably missed this year

But you know what they say about dating – the best way to get over someone is to meet someone new. It works for binge watching too.

Here are a list of shows, some old and some new, to occupy your time between seasons.

If you liked Jessica Jones … you will like iZombie

Those of you missing the ferocity of superhero Jessica Jones will find solace in wisecracking zombie crime fighter Liv Moore. Liv and Jessica share the same black sense of humour and utter fearlessness, although iZombie is substantially less violent than Netflix’s gruesome series.

If you liked Making a Murderer … you will like American Crime

The case of Steven Avery captivated many around the world who are probably now at a loose end because they watched the entire series in one weekend. While anthology series American Crime is fictional, it takes a similar approach to its subjects, featuring a new standalone subject each season and exploring the legal process through the prism of its complex characters.

If you liked Glee … you will like Nashville

If you prefer your television with a side serving of musical numbers, Nashville is your show. Set in country music epicentre Nashville (surprise), it follows the interwoven lives of several talented musicians struggling to find fame in a competitive industry. Unlike Glee, it’s more of a drama than comedy. Like Glee, it will have you singing the songs from its soundtrack all day, every day.

If you liked Breaking Bad … you will like Shameless

Nothing will ever come close to the incomparable Breaking Bad, but if you’re looking for shock factor, entertainment value and grit, Shameless is your show. Centred on the out-of-control Gallagher family and its troubled patriarch Frank Gallagher (William H Macy) its six seasons push the envelope more than any other show on television.

If you liked Bloodline … you will like The Affair

Got a soft spot for character-based drama? Netflix’s Bloodline was all about a dysfunctional family in Florida, while The Affair is about dysfunctional couples living in New York. When Noah and Alison have an affair, they can’t predict the extent of the fallout for their respective spouses. Interesting for its unique narrative structure, The Affair jumps around different characters’ perspectives to craft a compelling retelling of a pivotal incident.

If you liked Orange Is the New Black … you will like Mozart in the Jungle

If you enjoy high-concept television with a double dose of quirk, multi-award-winning dramedy Mozart in the Jungle fits the bill. Rodrigo (Gael Garcia Bernal) is a fiery conductor hired by the New York Symphony to inject some youthful energy into the stuffy, tired group. He brings that and a whole lot more to the table.

If you liked Mad Men … you will like Masters of Sex

Historical accuracy? Check. Beautifully written characters? Check. Complicated relationships? Check. Awesome outfits? Double check. This critically acclaimed period drama tells the story of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, pioneers of the science of sex. If it sounds juicy, it is – but there’s more to this beautifully woven drama than just bonking.
