Downton Abbey ended on a high when Lady Edith finally got her happily ever after.

The show’s Christmas Day special even saw her patch things up with her sister Lady Mary, played by Michelle Dockery, after a long-standing feud between the pair.

It was Mary who brought Edith, played by Laura Carmichael, and Bertie Pelham (Harry Hadden-Paton), back together before they tied the knot.

The final episode of the hit ITV drama was trending on Twitter worldwide.

Edith also reconciled with Bertie’s mother, played by Patricia Hodge, best known in recent years for her role in BBC One comedy Miranda, after revealing she has a secret illegitimate daughter.

Anna and John Bates, played by Joanne Froggatt and Brendan Coyle, welcomed their newborn son, who was controversially born in Mary’s bedroom.

Henry Talbot, played by Matthew Goode, and Mary also discovered they are expecting a child together.

Penelope Wilton, as Isobel Crawley, and Richard Grey, the Baron Merton, played by Douglas Reith, also found happiness when they stood up to his pushy children and decided to get married.

As the costume drama came to an end, the butler, Carson, played by Jim Carter, retired after developing hand tremors, probably caused by Parkinson’s Disease.

He handed his role over to the controversial Thomas Barrow, played by Rob James-Collier, who returned to the household after a brief spell in another job.

Lord Grantham, played by Hugh Bonneville, declared his enduring love for his wife Lady Cora (Elizabeth McGovern), when he accepted her working at a hospital.

The final scene saw the servants singing Auld Lang Syne as they celebrated New Year’s Eve.

Downton Abbey debuted on ITV in 2010 and became a global phenomenon, collecting numerous awards along the way.

It also grew into a pop culture favourite with spoofs and parodies from Sesame Street and The Simpsons, to name a few, lighting up social media.
