Last Week Tonight host John Oliver took one final dig at former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott while on the red carpet at the 67th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

Network Ten’s Angela Bishop asked the comedian about the former PM, who featured heavily in Oliver’s show, in an interview before the Emmys ceremony on Monday (Sunday US time).

“Ding Dong, Tony is dead,” Oliver joked.

He then poured some water out on the curb in honour of Mr Abbott’s loss.

Oliver said he was in Melbourne when Mr Abbott attempted to introduce the disastrous Australian Border Force operation, set up to check people’s visas across Melbourne. Plans for the operation were cancelled after protests.

“I don’t know what the point of Tony Abbott was but it was fun while it lasted” Oliver said.

“It was like taking heroin; it was incredibly exhilarating and it was right that you stopped.”

Oliver also weighed in to the American Presidential race, saying he didn’t think hopeful Donald Trump would be elected.

“Yeah but I don’t think he will be elected. You did elect Tony Abbott,” he quipped.
