Marge and Homer Simpson are breaking up

Love isn’t real.

If you need evidence of this fact, look no further than the 27th season of The Simpsons.

The real people behind the TV characters

Al Jean, the executive producer of the hit series, has revealed Simpson parents Marge and Homer will be splitting up in an interview with Variety magazine.

Speaking about the upcoming season, Jean said Marge and Homer’s long-running marriage (they got married in the 80s) will hit a permanent rocky patch.

“In the premiere, it’s discovered after all the years Homer has narcolepsy and it’s an incredible strain on the marriage,” Jean said.

“Homer and Marge legally separate, and Homer falls in love with his pharmacist, who’s voiced by Lena Dunham.”

Darn it, Lena!

The show has had a tumultuous past year, with beloved creator Sam Simon passing away from cancer and lead voice actor Harry Shearer quitting the show.

Shearer was responsible for voicing Mr Burns, Ned Flanders and Principal Skinner, prompting the roles to be recast.

Jean also shared other, less depressing details about season 27, including the return of Homer’s pet, Plopper the Pig.

“Spider Pig makes his return. Sideshow Bob appears in a segment, and we finally see him do something he’s wanted to do for 25 years. And we have an episode based on the film Boyhood,” Jean said.
