According to the US publication, Sweeten was visiting his family in Texas on Thursday when he died.

On Friday Sweeten’s sister, Madylin, who played his older sister Ally on the sitcom encouraged others to “reach out to the ones you love” and requested privacy for her family during this time.

“This morning a terrible family tragedy has occurred. We are devastated to report that our beloved brother, son, and friend, Sawyer Sweeten, took his own life. He was weeks away from his 20th birthday,” she said.

Sweeten’s on-screen mother, Patricia Heaton paid tribute to him via Twitter.

Sweeten played Geoffrey Barone in the US comedy, starring Ray Romano for nine years.

Everybody Loves Raymond was a nightly fixture on Australian TV screens from 1996 to 2005. Sweeten and his twin brother gave up acting after the show finished.

The series followed the life of Ray Barone (Romano) and his family as they dealt with police officer brother Robert Barone and meddling parents Marie and Frank Barone.
