‘Game of Thrones’ the most pirated TV show

The most pirated TV show in the world is medieval fantasy saga Game of Thrones, according to anti-piracy group Irdeto.

Just days before season five of the cult program premiered, Irdeto revealed that Brazilians made the most illegal downloads of the show, with 935,990 between February 5 and April 6, The Independent reports.

The USA is next in line with 464,402, where China notched up 205,436 downloads of the hit show, during the same period.

The map below shows the countries that downloaded Game of Thrones during the monthly period. Those in red, including Australia, represent between one and 400,000 downloads.

According to Irdeto, the next most illegally downloaded TV program is The Walking Dead, followed by Breaking Bad, Vikings and House of Cards.

Meanwhile, on Saturday night the Game of Thrones season five premiere leaked online, days before the episode debuted on Foxtel on Monday morning (AEST).

In regards to the leaked episodes, Australians are number four in the world for downloading GoT season five illegally, with almost 150,000 pirated copies.

According to German piracy tracking firm, Excipio, by 5pm (AEST) on Monday the TV show had been downloaded locally 148,855 times.

The total number of downloads worldwide was 2,348,217.

The internet was abuzz early Sunday with fans positing links to torrenting sites where the first episode was available.
