Where are they now? Seinfeld 25 years on

So, Seinfeld turned 25 this week and we all realised how much we had been missing the show.

In case you missed our 25 greatest Seinfeld moments, here is your opportunity to brush up on what was probably the best sitcom of the past 25 years.

But if your nostalgia for the show extends to the actors and the New York City locations that were behind its success, take a walk down memory lane with us and catch up with some old friends and locations.

The cast

Jerry Seinfeld

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld, 60, was the co-creator of Seinfeld with his creative partner, Larry David. He now has a successful internet show called Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee. Seinfeld has immersed himself in the internet comedy culture and has a young family with his wife, Jessica.

George

You mean aside from being the spokesperson for weight loss giant Jenny Craig? Jason Alexander’s post Seinfeld life is as far away from his neurotic character, George Costanza (Can’t-Stand-Ya), as humanly possible. Alexander, 54, is now a semi-professional poker player who also picks and chooses acting parts. In a strange twist, he was also the MC at Geoffrey Edelsten’s bizarre 2009 wedding.

Elaine

Probably the most successful post-Seinfeld star (if you don’t count Jerry Seinfeld’s personal fortune: click the owl to see the whopping sum   ). Julia Louis-Dreyfus is the leading lady in the hit HBO TV show VEEP, in which she plays the Vice President of the United States. Louis-Dreyfus is a Hollywood darling and has recently also starred in the romantic comedy Enough Said with Soprano’s legend James Gandolfini.

Kramer

Things got real for Michael Richards following a stand-up comedy show in Los Angeles. During his routine, Richards racially abused some African American audience members and was chastised across the world. He later apologised and now stars with Kirstie Alley in her sitcom Kirstie.

Notable supporting characters

Newman

As the best recurring support actor on Seinfeld, Wayne Knight is widely remembered for his 48 episode stint as the comedian’s nemesis, Newman!. Since the series wound up in 1998, Knight has acted in numerous films and TV shows, including 3rd Rock from the Sun, The Drew Carey Show, CSI:NY and the 2008 movie Kung Fu Panda.

Frank Costanza

Jerry Stiller stole every scene he was in as George Costanza’s strange dad, Frank. The now 87-year-old walked straight from Seinfeld into another successful dad role as Arthur Spooner in the King of Queens. His last major TV appearance was in a 2011 episode of The Good Wife, but he still does voice overs.

David Puddy

Patrick Warburton was Elaine’s intense on-off boyfriend, Puddy. Warburton’s career took off after the show. He has starred in Rules of Engagement and has several TV shows and films in production.

Kenny Bania

Steve Hytner played one of the most annoying regular supporting characters on six episodes of Seinfeld – Bania.  He went on to bit parts in shows like Two and a Half Men and Modern Family.

Jerry’s dentist

Well hello, Breaking Bad. Bryan Cranston segued his role Jerry’s dentist, Tim Whatley, in five episodes Seinfeld to Malcolm in the Middle and then to the show that basically broke TV.

Susan

After her character, Susan, died from licking too many dodgy wedding invitations, actress Heidi Swegberg moved on to guest appearances in shows such as ER and Gilmore Girls, but her real passion has always been playing the ukelele.

The Set

To commemorate the show’s 25th Anniversary, The Atlantic had a look at what happened to some of the show’s key locations.

The coffee shop

Called Monk’s Cafe in the show, Tom’s Restaurant is still going strong on New York’s Upper West Side.

The Soup Nazi

A real Manhattan institution, The Original Soup Man is on 55th street and apparently Jerry has been blacklisted for calling the proprietor a Nazi.

On a final note

In the meantime, if you’re still having withdrawals, the creators of the @Seinfeld2000 Twitter feed have submitted a Seinfeld emoji app to the Apple iTunes store that can be used to yada, yada, yada your point across.
