Is this the worst outfit ever? Rihanna’s unusual Coachella style

Californian music festival Coachella is renowned for inspiring unusual fashion choices and pop star Rihanna is revered for her risque fashion sense.

Combine the two, it turns out, and you unfortunately end up with a sartorial disaster.

Attending the first few days of the six-day festival in Palm Springs, the 30-year-old singer sported a series of questionable outfits, none of which accounted for the weather nor the occasion.

On the first weekend of the annual event – which typically draws thousands of celebrities and trendsetters to the Californian desert – the Grammy winner opted for high-heeled, thigh-high Ugg boots and a sheer swathe of fabric wrapped around her upper body.

The bizarre get-up was from Parisian street style label Y/Project’s Fall ready-to-wear show, for which head designer Glenn Martens collaborated with Ugg to create the shearling waders.

In typical Rihanna fashion, the singer didn’t bother with underwear, leading many to cry ‘wardrobe malfunction!’.

The reviews for Riri’s look were mixed, with some outlets claiming she had “won” the festival with her outlandish fashion, and others suggesting the outfit was merely made cool because she was wearing it.

Later, Rihanna changed into snakeskin boots and pants, an oversized men’s shirt and jumper and a bedazzled Gucci ski mask, earning herself comparisons to American wrestler Rey Mysterio, who famously wears a Mexican wrestling mask in the ring.

Given temperatures in Palm Springs can soar to over 30 degrees Celsius during the day, it’s hard to imagine Rihanna was feeling remotely comfortable with every centimetre of her body covered in heavy fabric.

The Barbados-born singer wasn’t at the festival to perform, but to enjoy the crowd atmosphere – she was in the audience for Beyonce’s set and was filmed singing along from the front row.

On Saturday while hosting a pool party, Rihanna chose a more demure look – by her standards – wearing a hot pink bodysuit and black parachute pants from her own label, Fenty.

To be fair, Rihanna wasn’t the only person to take a fashion risk at the festival – although she certainly took a bigger gamble than most.

The only person who came close to Rihanna’s level of outfit commitment was, unsurprisingly, Beyonce who sported a cropped jumper with denim shorts and silver fringed boots and even managed a nail change midway through her performance.

Keen-eyed fans spotted the singer switching from a black manicure to a nude metallic manicure in one costume change – just one of the many detailed elements that contributed to attendees dubbing the festival ‘Beychella’ in her honour.
