Brownlow style: this year’s best and worst dressed

The unspoken theme of this year’s Brownlow red carpet was clear – the wives and girlfriends of Australia’s footy stars were all embracing the bridal look.

Whether a subtle hint to their dates or a happy coincidence, the ladies of the Brownlow were dressed mainly in white.

Nadia Bartel, Rebecca Judd and Jordan Papalia looked ready to walk down the aisle, while Corey Enright’s wife Renee put her own twist on the theme in an all-white tuxedo.

Unsurprisingly, one of the few women to subvert the bridal trend and throw caution to the curb was Gabi Grecko, whose Gothic garb and body glitter drew comparisons to Lady Gaga.

Here, The New Daily breaks down our picks for the sartorial highlights and lowlights of footy’s big night.

Best dressed

2014 Brownlow Medal

Alex Davis: Scott Pendlebury’s partner went for something simple and classic and it paid off.

While Davis was missing a lot of the bling seen on her fellow WAGs, she stood out in this flattering navy gown and was the picture of elegance.

2014 Brownlow Medal

Candice Quinlan: While bright yellow may be a daring choice for a black tie event, Quinlan pulled it off and then some.

Paired with a deep red lip, Isaac Smith’s partner looked like she had stepped straight off a Hollywood red carpet. Simply beautiful.

Jesinta Campbell: Fast emerging as the next Rebecca Judd, the former Miss Universe Australia chose a striking, structural lavender gown for her Brownlow debut. The modern silhouette was unique and, with simple sideswept hair, Campbell carried it off perfectly.

AFL BROWNLOW MEDAL

Jessica Holtham: In whimsical grey tulle, Nathan Van Berlo’s partner paired a floaty gown with a modern ponytail and looked comfortable, relaxed and chic.

2014 Brownlow Medal

Jordan Papalia: Gary Ablett’s partner took a fashion punt with this eclectic combination of sheer skirt, off-the-shoulder gown and choker necklace. Against all odds, her risk paid off.

Papalia looked youthful and fashion-forward and her simple hairdo let her unusual gown take centre stage.

Worst dressed

2014 Brownlow MedalGabi Grecko: Let’s be honest: we never expected it to be good. Australia’s answer to Lady Gaga, Grecko loves to shock and she did so with aplomb, pulling photographers away from more demurely dressed members of the carpet and igniting discussion on social media.

However, we think that Geoffrey Edelsten’s fiancee actually showed restraint with this gothic get-up – which isn’t really saying much.

2014 Brownlow Medal

Emma Clapham: While undoubtedly one of the most beautiful women on the carpet, Tom Hawkins’ date did herself a disservice in this mother-of-the-bride style outfit and dated hairdo.

2014 Brownlow Medal

Amy Schultz: Fortunately, Schultz has the abs for a crop top. Unfortunately, this was the wrong crop top to choose.

The wife of Port Adelaide’s Jay Schulz, she looked more like a giant doily than a red carpet icon, but we give her extra points for her fabulous hair.

2014 Brownlow Medal

Georgie Amad: The partner of Carlton’s Michael Jamison, Amad was glowing from head to toe. However, her gown selection was better suited to a Jennifer Lopez performance at the MTV Awards than a footy awards show.

2014 Brownlow Medal

Nadia Bartel: We had high hopes for the fashion blogger, but she disappointed us with this dull neoprene gown. The bondage-style straps distracted from her sleek silhouette and the slicked-back hair was too severe.

2014 Brownlow Medal

Lauren Pavlich: Pavlich nearly had it right, but she broke one of fashion’s strictest rules: pick one focal point and stick to it.

This gown was revealing on both the top and bottom, and drew the eye away from her statement earrings and pretty natural makeup.

Ruby Keddia: Gorgeous girl, but a tacky beauty queen gown. Better luck next time.
