Barry Humphries’ appointment as artistic director a coup for Adelaide Cabaret Festival

Barry Humphries will be artistic director of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival in 2015.

Humphries will take over the role from singer Kate Ceberano.

Adelaide Festival Centre CEO Douglas Gautier said the appointment was a coup for the Cabaret Festival.

“It’s a great thing for us and I think it will bring lots of kudos with it and a lot of attention with it and of course Barry – with all of his fantastic contacts worldwide and across this country – will bring a very interesting group of artists together,” he said.

Mr Gautier said Adelaide was held in high regard by Humphries.

“He first performed here back in 1953 at Her Majesty’s Theatre, he loves that theatre very much,” he said.

“He’s been connected with the city in all sorts of ways over the years. He likes the city, he likes what we’ve been doing I think with the Cabaret Festival.

“He’s agreed to become the patron of our building fund for Her Majesty’s Theatre.”
