Adele fans have united in song after the singer announced she would be cancelling the final two concerts of her 123-show world tour due to damaged vocal chords.

The 29-year-old superstar broke the news on social media, saying she had “struggled” through the last two performances at Wembley Stadium, having to constantly clear her throat.

In a lengthy apology, she wrote that her throat doctor had advised her not to perform.

“I’m already maxed out on steroids and aids for my voice,” she wrote.

“I’ve considered doing Saturday night’s show but it’s highly unlikely I’d even make it through the set, and I simply can’t crumble in front of you all and walk out on you in that way.”

Adele even admitted she’d considered lip-syncing.

“I’m so desperate to do them, I’ve even considered miming, just to be in front of you and with you.

“But I’ve never done it and I could not in a million years do that to you.”

Adele said refunds would be available if the shows could not be rescheduled.

While those who had purchased tickets for Adele’s last two sell-out shows could not hear her sing, it did not mean they could not enjoy her music.

Disappointed ticket-holders took matters into their own hands and arranged a sing-song in her honour.

Using #SingForAdele on social media, her fans who call themselves “the Daydreamers” organised to meet outside the Wembley concert venue at the time that they would have been hearing her sing, and perform their own renditions of her tracks.

The call for fans to come and sing on social media said: “Adele can’t sing for us, but we can sing for her.”

People tweeted that they found the gesture touching, and those who gathered at the event shared clips of the sing-a-long.

There was a small portion of fans, however, who let out their frustration on social media, blaming Adele’s intense, “unrealistic” schedule for their disappointment.

“Adele, well done for letting fans down! Next time don’t get greedy and have too many concerts planned if you can’t handle it,” one Twitter user wrote.

“Adele (is) cancelling her show tomorrow night, saying she’l’ refund tickets … bet she won’t refund the train down, hotel and flights back!” another wrote.

Others questioned whether travel insurance would cover their flight and accommodation paid specifically for the night of the show.

“Am gutted Adele has had to cancel her concerts — does anyone know if travel insurance covers this as flight and hotel paid for?”

News of the cancelled shows came just days after the British singer hinted at retirement in a handwritten letter at the back of her tour programme.

“So this is it. After 15 months on the road and 18 months of [the album] 25, we are at the end,” the 29-year-old singer wrote.

“Touring is a peculiar thing, it doesn’t suit me particularly well. I’m a real homebody and I get so much joy in the small things. Plus I’m dramatic and have a terrible history of touring. Until now that is!”
