One Direction fans have gone into meltdown over suggestions the boy band sensation is over.

Liam Payne, one of One Direction’s main songwriters, took to Twitter on Thursday to announce that he had signed a solo deal with a record company, just days before the band’s six-year anniversary.

The hashtag, #OneDirectionIsOverParty, had amassed almost 600,000 uses by mid-morning Australian eastern time, as so-called Directioners feared the worst— that after many earlier threats to the band’s survival, the One Direction phenomenon might finally be over.

But Payne’s arguably cryptic follow-up tweet didn’t make it clear whether he would combine a solo career with a continuing role with the band.

The group announced last year that it would take a break as members explored solo careers, while Zayn Malik announced in March 2015 he was leaving to pursue a solo career and be a “normal 22-year-old”.

Harry Styles is starring in a movie, while Louis Tomlinson is a judge on America’s Got Talent.
