Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl has duked it out with The Muppets’ Animal in a ferocious drum battle, with neither managing to gain the upper hand.

“I’ve been waiting years for this, Animal,” said Grohl, as the pair faced off on a dimly-lit stage.

“Now we see who best,” Animal grunted, before ripping into a brief solo in the clip, from The Muppets on America’s ABC network.

The pair exchanged a few more insults as the drumming intensified, with the madness escalating and neither able to gain an edge.

Snares, toms and cymbals were sent flying as they battled, until both were left breathless.

“You win,” they both said simultaneously at the end.

It is unclear whether the battle was a result of Grohl’s appearance in the 2011 Muppet film, where he played “Animool”, the drummer of a spoof group called “The Moopets” led by Fozzie Bear.

But it is not Animal’s first drum battle either, with the Muppet challenging legendary drummer Buddy Rich in 1981.
