Beatles legend Ringo Starr has claimed “Miley is my girl” when asked to choose between popstars Taylor Swift or Katy Perry.

The drummer also named the White Album his favourite Beatles album and described the supposed rift between The Beatles and the Rolling Stones as a tabloid invention.

“Between ourselves there was a good relationship, but it seemed like the press wanted to cause havoc,” he told the Ten Network’s The Project on Thursday night.

The Beatles came out of Liverpool in northwest England to become one of the best-selling and most influential rock bands in history.

When pressed on who he’d describe as the greatest band of all time, Starr said: “I was in the greatest band of all time.”

“It was an incredible band, incredible writers. We were doing stuff that had never been done before. After the touring, we went into the studio.

“You know, a lot of accidents happened that we get credit for, but musically we were brilliant.

“You can put anything we did on record up against anybody out there right now, and it is as good.”

When pressed on who he’d choose between Taylor Swift or Katy Perry, the former Beatle quipped: “Miley is my girl”, to studio laughter.

Starr is promoting a new book containing unseen photographs taken during his time with the band which will be released on September 21.

Starr and Paul McCartney are the only surviving Beatles after John Lennon was shot dead in 1980 and George Harrison died of cancer in 2001.
