Since releasing their entire album for free on iTunes last year, U2 are fast becoming a band of the people.

But the hugely successful Irish rock band took it to a whole new level on Tuesday, giving a surprise live performance at the Grand Central Terminal subway station in New York City.

Lucky commuters were treated to a rendition of the band’s hit song ‘Angel of Harlem’ as they taped segments for their Friday appearance on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

U2 courted controversy last year when they were accused of “forcing” their music on millions of iTunes users when their album Songs of Innocence automatically uploaded to their music libraries.

The band kick off their world tour in Vancouver on May 14.
