If the recent spate of Star Wars films wasn’t enough to sate your appetite for the galaxy far, far away, details of the next instalment have been announced, complete with a full cast photo.

After 2015’s The Force Awakens and 2016’s Rogue One, yet another galactic thriller has commenced filming, so far only known as the untitled Star Wars Han Solo project.

The movie stars up-and-comer Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo, the character made famous by Harrison Ford, and takes place before the events of 1977’s A New Hope.

If Ehrenreich looks familiar, it’s likely you recognise him from one of his recent feature film roles in Hail, Caesar!, Blue Jasmine or Beautiful Creatures.

Filming in London, the movie is co-directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the writer/director duo behind The LEGO Movie, which grossed more than $US469 million worldwide.

According to Lord and Miller, Ehrenreich was the first actor to read for the role, and they took the casting process for the beloved Ford’s replacement very seriously.

“That guy pretty much went through an audition pentathlon; it was like an acting steeplechase,” Miller told USA Today.

“He went against a lot of very strong competitors and was very consistently the guy from minute one.”

The movie centres on Han Solo’s adventures with his Wookiee sidekick Chewbacca, and will include an encounter with future double-crosser Lando Calrissian, according to the Star Wars official website.

Calrissian, who was previously played by Billy Dee Williams, will be played by actor, rapper and writer Donald Glover, whose star status is skyrocketing thanks to his hit new TV series, Atlanta.

Other cast members include Woody Harrelson, Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton (Westworld) and British actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge, all in unidentified roles.

Finnish basketball player Joonas Suotamo will don the iconic Chewbacca suit, which has up until now been worn exclusively by British actor Peter Mayhew.

At 209 cm tall, Suotamo fits the bill perfectly and is even a little on the shorter side – his predecessor is 218 cm.

After the release of the first official cast photo on Wednesday, Suotamo shared his excitement on Twitter, thanking Mayhew for his support.

“I am profoundly grateful for this amazing opportunity,” Suotamo said.

But avid fans shouldn’t start the countdown too soon – the film isn’t slated for release until May 2018.
