Jolie, now 40, made two movies playing Croft, the protagonist of the popular Tomb Raider video games.

While the films were slammed by critics, they were box office successes, grossing more than US$400 million globally.

Vikander, 27will reportedly play a young, uninitiated Croft in her first adventure.

The Swedish actress is swiftly becoming one of the most bankable actresses in Hollywood after winning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar this year for her role in The Danish Girl.

While Vikander’s star is still on the rise, she is no stranger to blockbuster action franchises – she will appear in the new Jason Bourne movie alongside Matt Damon later this year.

The new Lara Croft film will simply be titled Tomb Raider and is being co-produced by MGM and Warner Bros.
