Big names snubbed at SAG Awards nominations

Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars and films have missed out on nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The SAG Awards, often considered the best predictor for the Oscars, surprised film reviewers and critics with some of the films it didn’t include, as well as some of the cast in presumed Oscars frontrunners The Martian and Joy.

History suggests these snubbed films and actors may not do too well in the 2016 awards season.

• Liam Hemsworth outsells brother Chris at box office
• Australia has a solid shot at claiming an Oscar
• The Revenant is the most beautiful film of the year

The Martian

One of the year’s best films, The Martian had overwhelmingly positive reviews and great financial success. However, it failed to score any nominations despite lauded performances from lead Matt Damon and the ensemble cast.

Creed

The Rocky spin-off was a box-office success and featured well-reviewed performances by Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan. Stallone even won an award for his performance from the American National Board of Review, but it wasn’t enough to secure a nomination.

Spotlight

The journalism procedural has received rave reviews about its good handling of heavy content, and is expected to do well during awards season. Rachel McAdams secured a nomination for her role, but none of her male co-stars, including Mark Ruffalo and 2015 nominee Michael Keaton, got a mention on the list.

Joy

Jennifer Lawrence won a SAG Award and an Oscar for her role in Silver Linings Playbook in 2013 but didn’t receive any recognition for her latest collaboration with David O. Russell.

Joy has received mixed reviews and may have suffered due to its late release date, meaning fewer voting committee members saw it. Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight may have suffered similarly as voters had to attend special screenings to see it.

The nominations are…

The SAG Awards news was better for films like Trumbo, which received three nominations.

Idris Elba received three nominations for his work on Netflix original film Beasts of No Nation and television drama Luther, and Helen Mirren also received three nominations for The Woman in Gold and Trumbo.

The winners will be announced in a ceremony on January 30.
