Sequel to Oscar-winning Chariots of Fire in the works

British actor Joseph Fiennes will portray Olympic athlete Eric Liddell in an unofficial sequel to the classic Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire.

In the celebrated Hugh Hudson movie, set in the early 1920s, actor Ian Charleson played Liddell, a Scottish Christian runner who was forced to choose between his religious beliefs and competing in an Olympic race.

Remake kingdom: has Hollywood lost the plot?

Ben Cross played British runner Harold Abrahams in the original film.

The film won four Oscars at the 54th Academy Awards in 1982, including Best Picture and Best Original Score, which was compsed by Greek-born electronic composer Vangelis.

Now directors Stephen Shin and Michael Parker are set to pick up the story where Chariots of Fire left off, reports Deadline.com.

The Last Race will follow Liddell after his win at the Paris Olympics in 1924, when he returned to his missionary work in China. He later died in a Japanese internment camp in 1945.

Shakespeare in Love star Fiennes will officially announce the project at an upcoming ceremony in China, where the film will be shot.

Chinese actor Xiao Dou will play Liddell’s prisoner friend Xu Niu. Further casting details are yet to be revealed.
