Leave it to Michael Fassbender to make a Shakespeare play seem more like a blockbuster action flick.
The German-Irish actor is the latest thespian to adopt the iconic role of Macbeth alongside French actress Marion Cotillard, who plays his relentlessly ambitious wife Lady Macbeth.
The latest big-screen version of William Shakespeare’s famous power piece was directed by Australian director Justin Kurzel, the man behind the critically-acclaimed 2011 Australian film Snowtown.
The film, set in the gloomy Scottish highlands, received glowing reviews when it debuted at the Cannes Film Festival last month.
Fassbender and Cotillard are already awards season favourites, with the film’s October release placing it in line for Oscar nominations.
