Movie musts: what to watch this week

Obvious child

Director: Gillian Robespierre
Cast: Jenny Slate, Jake Lacy, Gaby Hoffmann, Gabe Liedman
Rating: MA15+
Running time: 87 mins
Release date: October 2, 2014

Why you should see it: Jenny Slate has real star power in this acerbic look at a twenty-something New York comedian considering an abortion after a careless one night stand. Cut from the same cloth as last year’s hipster hit Frances Ha and the mothership series GirlsObvious Child is a frank, funny – if ultimately light-on – slice of Gen Y angst.

Siddharth

Director: Richie Mehta
Cast: Tannishtha Chatterjee, Anurag Arora, Shobha Sharma Jassi
Rating:
M
Running time:
96 mins
Release date:
October 9, 2014

Why you should see it: Stephen A Russell says – There’s an almost documentary realness to Canadian writer/director Richie Mehta’s Siddharth, starring Rajesh Tailang as Mahendra, a naive but loving father who scrapes by on the streets of Delhi, fixing broken zips for a pittance from those who would rather he was invisible, so that he can feed his young family. An incredibly powerful film delivered with a quiet stoicism. Haunting.

Gone Girl

Director: David Fincher
Cast: Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, David Clennon, Patrick Fugit, Sela Ward
Rating: MA15+
Running time: 149 min
Release date: 2 October, 2014

Why you should see it: Engrossing, sporadically violent and, at times, hilarious, this unconventional thriller is unlike anything else in cinemas. Centred on the disappearance of complicated housewife Amy (Rosamund Pike) and the ensuing media circus surrounding her suspicious husband, Nick (Ben Affleck), the movie jolts the audience from the opening scene, as Nick intimately shares his fantasy of smashing his wife’s skull in. Read the full review here
