‘Annie’ gets a modern revamp

The trailer for the new Annie is out and it already has the internet rejoicing. First of all, it stars adorable Oscar nominee, Beasts of the Southern Wild‘s Quvenzhané Wallis, as Annie. Secondly, it’s set in current-day New York, providing some pretty cool dance-break backdrops. Finally, it has a killer, and perhaps surprising, cast.

Cameron Diaz stars as the cornrowed, bitter Miss Hannigan (a role originally intended for Sandra Bullock until she pulled out) and Jamie Foxx takes on the Daddy Warbucks character, playing self-absorbed politician Benjamin Stacks. The musical also features Australian actress Rose Byrne as Stacks’ kindhearted assistant.

The new Annie looks slightly less bleak than the Depression-era original, with references to Facebook and George Clooney proving that, while it’s still a hard-knock life, this ain’t the 1930’s any more.
