Cate Blanchett’s 2014 Oscar chances grow

Another day, another nomination for Cate Blanchett.

The Australian actress has continued her run at the best actress Oscar by picking up a Critics Choice nomination for her performance in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine.

It follows Blanchett’s Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations and confirms her favouritism for an Oscar at the Academy Awards ceremony on March 2.

Baz Luhrmann was snubbed for a directing nomination for The Great Gatsby, but his wife Catherine Martin strengthened her chances of another double Oscar win for her work on the Sydney film.

Martin, who won two Oscars for Moulin Rouge, received costume and production design Critics Choice nominations for her work on Gatsby.

Another Aussie, director James Wan, is nominated in the best horror/science fiction film category for The Conjuring.

American Hustle and 12 Years a Slave continued their fight for best picture Oscar favouritism with 13 Critics Choice nominations each.

The awards are decided by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the largest critics’ group in North America. The winners will be announced on January 16, the same day the Oscar nominations are revealed.
