Fittingly for a movie that touches on the famous Manson killings, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood produced a red carpet premiere which saw stars murder fashion but also slay.

Britney Spears opted to make her red carpet debut with boyfriend Sam Asghari in a body-con bandage dress that was very 2007.

The black shoes made her look like an Essendon Football Club coterie member but the whole package was totally on brand.

Sam needed to rethink the pale summer suit with black winter boot thing. Ill-conceived and something a Married at First Sight groom would think is cool.

Not so this man, who had everything bang to rights. Brad Pitt was at his best, in a perfectly tailored suit and enviable hair, with a bracelet that was possibly an homage to Prince Harry’s insouciant African jewellery.

It’s tempting to say Margot Robbie is always amazing and I get that here she was trying to channel a Sharon Tate ’60s vibe. Even so, the hair and orange eye shadow came off as contrived. The dress, divine.

Elsa Pataky was cute, like a minor character from Grease transported forward a decade. Her husband Chris Hemsworth was relaxed although I wonder what emergency saw him borrow those loafers.

Margaret Qualley needn’t have looked terrified; she was captivating in a school project about net fishing. Beautiful shoes.

Pierce Brosnan, you should be pumped. Your son Dylan did the retro theme of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood proud with his Marcia Brady hair, John Lennon glasses and George Lazenby jacket.

Robin Thicke wore winter wedding garb while April Love Geary came as Mariah Carey from back in the day. Bust.

Rebecca Gayheart took her duties as token starlet in Grecian frock quite seriously.

Rumer Willis interpreted Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as meaning Once Upon a Time in 1840s Hollywood.

Her sister Tallulah was totally modern and quite fabulous in a fuschia pantsuit and shoes Bianca Jagger would have coveted. Tick!

And third Willis sister Scout seemingly had the same shoes but not quite the same success. Her dress looked like she’d stolen sister Rumer’s bustle and stuck it at the front.

Wow. Joe Manganiello and Sofia Vergara look so in love it’s hard to even look at their outfits. He was auditioning for a role as an undertaker at an outside funeral. She was totally herself.

Vanessa Hudgens! Awesome. Suggestive without being tacky, slinky without being boring. And pockets.

Leonardo DiCaprio knows what he’s doing and he did it well here. Handmade suit, matching tie, brown shoes, contemptuous look.

Adriana Lima was fantastic in ruched red that had a ton of ’70s sass. Wonderful sandals: Compare them to the clunky black jobs of other guests and see how you feel.

There’s fun and original, and then there’s Eli Roth.

Speaking of fun, Don Johnson looked like he was having lots. The white jean is tricky unless you’re Roman and actually in Rome but this man invented the flashy casual code.

Toni Basil was a bit Liza Minnelli, a bit Willy Wonka, a bit scary.
