Australian actress Yvonne Strahovski is due for a baby and an Emmy Award. The question is, will she hold her newborn or an Emmy trophy first?

The 70th Annual Emmy Awards will be held in Los Angeles on Tuesday morning (AEST) and heavily pregnant Strahovski, due any second, and husband Tim Loden are expected to attend the ceremony.

Awards experts and bookmakers have the 36-year-old from Sydney the favourite to claim the Emmy for best supporting actress in a drama for her scene-stealing role in The Handmaid’s Tale.

Strahovski’s character, ironically, is desperate for a baby and does horrific things in pursuit of that goal.

The category appears to be a battle between the Australian and her The Handmaid’s Tale castmate Ann Dowd, with Westworld’s Thandie Newtown the potential spoiler.

The Los Angeles Times is among the leading publications tipping Strahovski as the winner, although the newspaper did not rule out Newtown swooping in with Strahovski, Dowd and another The Handmaid’s Tale nominee, Alexis Bledel, splitting their votes.

“Strahovski was good in the show’s premiere season, but she was an absolute revelation in its second,” the LA Times‘ Glenn Whip raved.

The category is stacked with talent and fan favourites, with Strahovski also up against Stranger Things‘ Millie Bobby Brown, Game of Thrones‘ Lena Headey and The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby.

The Handmaid’s Tale is also expected to win best drama series ahead of Game of Thrones although the sentimental pick is The Americans after the espionage drama recently ended its six-season run.

The Handmaid’s Tale’s star Elisabeth Moss is also expected to repeat last year’s lead actress in a drama win although there is a push for Sandra Oh for Killing Eve to win.

Atlanta and the Marvelous Mr Maisel are favourites for best comedy series.
The Americans‘ Matthew Rhys and This is US star Sterling K. Brown are the front runners for lead actors in in a drama series.
