Australian actor Vince Colosimo has spoken out about being caught with ice last year, blaming the media for his public problems.

Colosimo, 51, told The New Daily that the media had tried to taint his reputation by labelling him a drug addict.

“I was really hurt by those reports,” the Underbelly star said.

“People are just reporting things for the sake of it, even when you’ve come out and told them the truth,”

“[They] do this to get page one or three.”

He claimed he only used ice around three or four times in less than a year.

Colosimo was fined $1000 in January 2017 for possessing ice while driving after police found a small amount of the drug in a sunglasses case in his car in Melbourne in September 2016.

Last March, he was busted for driving under the influence of the same drug on a suspended licence and in November was fined $3500.

But asked by The New Daily about his troubles with the law, Colosimo was defiant and simply referred to the past year as a time of “reflection”.

He said any PR problems hadn’t affected his ability to attract roles: “I’ve had bigger spaces in my career and last year was just busy compared to other years.”

The actor – whose split with actor Diana Glenn, the mother of his son Massimo, 4, was confirmed last year when she became engaged to Adam Zammit – also said it hasn’t hurt his reputation with fans.

“Do you know why I love acting so much?” said Colosimo, who has a daughter Lucia, 15, with ex-wife Jane Hall.

“It’s because I’m so humbled by families who stop me in the street to tell me how much they love and cherish my work.”

Colosimo’s latest role is in psycho-thriller The Second, opposite Rachael Blake, his co-star in 2001’s Lantana.

He claims it’s not a comeback: “The last time I heard that word was when Elvis did his ’68 comeback special and he actually went away and made movies during that time.”

Set in regional Queensland, The Second follows the author of the erotic memoir (Blake), who brings her publisher (Colosimo) to her isolated family estate for a week so she can finish her second novel.

Their escape is quickly interrupted when the author’s old friend and muse (Susie Porter) shows up.

“It was different, and I loved and respected playing this character alongside two talented actresses,” he said.

Said Blake, 47, “It was so great to work with Vince again. I loved working closely with both of my co-stars because I knew they had my back.”

The star said she relished working on two dynamic storylines in the film – one being two estranged teenage friends reuniting in their adult years, and another, a writer grappling with her own morality.

“Mairi and I worked together and we would play with my scenes in different ways,” she told The New Daily.

“I loved the exploration of getting to decide with her which styles we’d do the scenes and what style we were pushing towards.

“I don’t think you’ve ever seen a film like this.”

The Second opened in cinemas nationally on July 6 and will air on Stan on July 20.
