Melania’s spokeswoman hints at rift over Stormy Daniels affair

Melania Trump’s spokeswoman has discredited claims by President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer that the First Lady believes her husband’s denials of an affair with porn star Stormy Daniels.

Speaking at a conference in Israel on Wednesday, Trump’s personal lawyer and advisor Rudy Giuliani said he knew what Mrs Trump thought about Ms Daniels’ allegations she had an “intimate relationship” with Mr Trump in 2006.

At the time the alleged relationship started, Mrs Trump’s son Barron was a couple of months old.

“She believes her husband,” Mr Giuliani said at the Tel Aviv conference.

“And she knows it’s untrue”.

But Thursday afternoon (US time), the first lady’s communications director Stephanie Grisham fired back at the former New York mayor.

“I don’t believe Mrs Trump has ever discussed her thoughts on anything with Mr Giuliani,” Ms Grisham told CNN in a statement.

She also delivered the same message to The New York Times.

Ms Grisham later said she had nothing more to add.

The rebuke to Mr Guiliani came after Mrs Trump publicly reappeared on Wednesay after an unprecedented 26-day absence which had media and concerned US citizens asking about the first lady’s health and whereabouts.

Mrs Trump, 48, who had a “successful” surgical procedure in her time away from the cameras, sat silently next to her husband at a FEMA briefing in Washington.

Melania “went through a little rough patch but she’s doing great and we’re very proud of her”, Mr Trump, 71, said. “So, thank you honey”.

The former model has never publicly addressed the Daniels controversy. According to Business Insider, she has chosen instead “a path of avoiding all press interviews and not responding, via Grisham, to repeated requests for comment from the media”.

Ms Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, told US 60 Minutes in March that she had asked Mr Trump in 2006 about Melania and Barron, now 12.

“He brushed it aside, said, ‘Oh yeah, yeah, you know, don’t worry about that’,” she said.

“We don’t even – we have separate rooms and stuff,” Trump added, according to Clifford.

Weeks before the 2016 presidential election, Mr Trump’s longtime lawyer Michael Cohen facilitated a $US130,000 hush money payment to Ms Daniels.

Mr Cohen is now the subject of a criminal investigation and is being sued – with Mr Trump – by Ms Daniels, who is seeking to void her nondisclosure agreement.

Last month Mr Giuliani revealed he reimbursed Mr Cohen for the hush money payment. It sparked a social media firestorm that saw Mr Trump tweet Ms Daniel’s allegation was “false”.

The White House has denied the affair happened.

Mr Giuliani attacked Ms Daniels personally at the conference, saying the claims she had sex with Mr Trump aren’t credible because she’s a porn actress with “no reputation”.

He said people could “just look” at Ms Daniels to know she wasn’t believable.

“I’m sorry I don’t respect a porn star the way I respect a career woman or a woman of substance or a woman who isn’t going to sell her body for sexual exploitation”, he said.

Her lawyer Michael Avenatti retweeted the statement from Melania’s spokeswoman, saying “Rudy is making it up as he goes along”.

The adult film industry slammed Mr Giuiliani’s comments as “offensive” and “outlandish”, saying he was aiming to discredit Ms Daniels based on how she earns money and not the facts of her allegations.

Mr Giuliani declined to comment further when contacted by The Associated Press.
