American actor Will Ferrell has been hospitalised following a two-car accident in California which saw his SUV spin out of control and flip over.

The 50-year-old Anchorman star was taken to hospital by ambulance after his car was hit by a sleepy driver on an Orange County freeway on Friday (Thursday evening local time).

Ferrell was travelling with three other people when the driver of a Toyota fell asleep at the wheel, hitting the rear of Ferrell’s SUV and causing it to spin out of control, hit a traffic divider and flip onto its side, the Orange County Register reports.

“The driver of the Toyota apparently had fallen asleep and struck the rear end of the Navigator causing it to hit the centre divider wall,” California Highway Patrol officer Rafael Reynoso told media.

The actor and three other passengers were injured. One of the passengers, a woman aged 27, was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt and suffered serious injuries.

Ferrell suffered minor injuries and has since been released from hospital, his agent told People magazine.

The actor was on his way home from a San Diego event encouraging people to vote where he appeared as his infamous Anchorman newsreader character Ron Burgundy.

Photos from the scene published by TMZ show a conscious Ferrell being loaded onto an ambulance by paramedics and speaking on his mobile phone.

The comedian established himself as a cast member on Saturday Night Live in the 1990s and is best known for his role in comedies such as Elf, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers, Blades of Glory, The Other Guys and Zoolander.

Ferrell holidayed in Australia in January with his wife and friends, appearing regularly at the Australian Open where he spoke of his love of Melbourne and the Yarra Valley wine region.
