Vanessa Trump has filed for divorce from her husband Donald Trump Jr, according to a public court record.

Mrs Trump, a former model, is seeking an uncontested divorce from Mr Trump Jr after filing a proceeding with the Manhattan Supreme Court on Thursday (local time).

An uncontested filing means the couple anticipate an amicable separation, without a legal battle over child custody or assets.

The couple, both 40, married in 2005 and have five children together, aged 3 to 10. Details of the divorce complaint haven’t been made public.

“After 12 years of marriage, we have decided to go our separate ways,” the couple told The New York Post in a joint statement.

“We will always have tremendous respect for each other and our families. We have five beautiful children together and they remain our top priority. We ask for your privacy during this time.”

The court filing didn’t include the names of the couple’s lawyers.

Vanessa Trump’s engagement and marriage to Donald Trump Jr, the US President’s eldest son, had been a subject of tabloid fascination in New York long before her father-in-law, Donald Trump, entered politics.

At the time of their engagement, there were unflattering stories about how Mr Trump Jr had accepted a free diamond ring from a jewellery merchant in New Jersey in exchange for staging a recreation of his wedding proposal outside the store for reporters and TV cameras.

According to The Post’s Page Six column, the two were struggling with marital problems due to Mr Trump Jr’s heavy travel schedule and his controversial tweets, mostly related to defending his father from all criticism.

Mr Trump Jr has been drawn into his father’s administration’s ongoing problems with the investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election, after he admitted to meeting a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower to discuss dirt on Hillary Clinton.

In September, Mr Trump Jr told the Senate Judiciary Committee investigating Russia interference, “I did not collude with any foreign government and do not know of anyone who did”.

Vanessa’s divorce filing comes the same day The New York Times reported special counsel Robert Mueller had subpoenaed the Trump Organisation to turn over documents, including those related to Russia.

According to the report, Mr Mueller ordered the Trump Organisation to hand over all documents related to Russia and other topics he is investigating.

It is the first known instance of the special counsel demanding documents directly related to President Trump’s businesses, bringing the investigation closer to the president.

Last month, Vanessa Trump opened a letter to her husband containing an unidentified white powder and was briefly hospitalised as a precaution, but the substance turned out to be non hazardous.

Shortly after his wife’s hospitalisation, Mr Trump Jr left for India on the trip with the Trump Organisation.

A Massachusetts man later was charged with sending the threatening letter.
