Oprah Winfrey has said she is waiting on a “sign from God” before she runs for president, revealing the global ‘Oprah 2020’ campaign sparked by her Golden Globes speech made her seriously consider the idea.

In an interview with People magazine, the legendary television host said she was stunned by the reaction to her female empowerment-themed speech while accepting the Cecil B DeMille Award at this year’s January ceremony.

“When I walked off with Reese [Witherspoon], I thought, ‘I got that done,’” she said.

“It wasn’t until I was back in the press room that they said, ‘Do you realise you’re trending?’”

Winfrey said she was inundated with calls from “wealthy” people offering her financial support should she choose to run.

“I had enough people – billionaires – calling me up and saying, ‘I can get you a billion dollars. I can run your campaign’,” she said.

“I pay attention, when you have that many people saying something … I have never ever in my life imagined that I would be in politics and I’ve always said, ‘No, no, no’.

“[But] that many people saying something made me think, ‘Am I at least supposed to look at the question?’”

The 64-year-old said the social media madness surrounding the speech, and the ensuing #Oprah2020 hashtag, prompted her to seek God’s guidance.

“I actually went into prayer about it,” she told the magazine.

“[I said] ‘God, if you think I’m supposed to run, you gotta tell me, and it has to be so clear that not even I can miss it.’ And I haven’t gotten that.”

This is the first time Winfrey has hinted she may have considered a run for office since her Golden Globes speech inspired 1.7 million tweets in 24 hours.

While promoting her upcoming movie A Wrinkle in Time, Winfrey also revealed a harsh tweet from current President Donald Trump regarding her interview skills “made her think for a second”.

On February 19, Mr Trump tweeted: “Just watched a very insecure Oprah Winfrey, who at one point I knew very well, interview a panel of people on 60 Minutes. The questions were biased and slanted, the facts incorrect. Hope Oprah runs so she can be exposed and defeated just like all of the others!”

Speaking to Vanity Fair on February 27 about the tweet, Winfrey said: “When the president of the United States criticises you, it did make me think for a second, ‘Was he right? Was there anything valid there?’ I went back and looked at the tape and I didn’t feel there was.”
