In what is shaping up as one of Hollywood’s biggest open secrets, Meghan Markle has quit US legal drama Suits, reports claim.

The 36-year-old is set to leave the hit show, where she plays lawyer Rachel Zane.

And the significance of the likely announcement is that her decision is seen by royal watchers as the last impediment to a potential engagement announcement.

“Meghan knows she can’t really act at the same time as being a princess and is happy to make this career sacrifice,” a source told The Daily Star.

“She really enjoys her charity work and will broaden out her charity commitments when she becomes a full-time royal.”

The reports are unconfirmed, and neither Kensington Palace or Suits executives are likely to comment at this stage.

The seventh season of Suits has around four weeks still left to film.

“Meghan loved playing Rachel and feels she owes so much to Suits,” a source told The Sun.

“But Harry can’t move to Toronto, so she’ll have to move eventually if they want to be together.

“Her decision to give up the biggest role of her career would mean a lot.”

Buzz that Markle will quit the show this year started in March, when Harry took her as his plus-one to a wedding in Jamaica.

A source told E! News at the time that she is “ready to be done with Suits” and “with acting in general.”

Even before Harry, said the source, “She was starting to think about transitioning. She wants to focus on other worldly endeavours she is passionate about.”

The rumours have since gained traction, with Harry criss-crossing the Atlantic a handful of times to stay with Markle at her low-key suburban home.

At last month’s Invictus Games in Toronto, Markle made her first official public appearance with the fifth-in-line to the throne.

She was reportedly assigned her own Scotland Yard royal protection officer, a security measure usually only accorded to royals or heads of state.

During the event, the pair held hands in public and were snapped kissing at the closing ceremony.

Harry, meanwhile, is ready to leave behind his two-bedroom cottage at Kensington Palace and has been house-hunting in the Cotswold Hills area of Oxfordshire, according to The Daily Mail.

“Before Meghan, he was vaguely looking in Norfolk, but didn’t find what he wanted,” said a source.

“Now, with her input, he’s renewed his search.”

Harry spent much of his childhood in the south Cotswolds, where his parents Prince Charles and Princess Diana had their rural home, Highgrove House.

Harry is said to have road-tested the area with Markle on getaways to luxe members’ club Soho Farmhouse in Great Tew in February and July, and in recent months has been spotted “discreetly” checking out Oxfordshire villages, said The Daily Mail.

“I’m not surprised he’s moving here — he’s in the local [pub] quite often,” one local said.

“You’d see his security men sitting outside and you’d know he’d be in there.”
