Actress Amber Heard and SpaceX founder Elon Musk have broken up, announcing the news in a surprisingly honest Instagram post.

Heard, 31, announced her split from the Tesla tycoon on Wednesday, posting a photo of a floral arrangement forming the words “give” and “love” to her Instagram page.

“Being in the public eye means having to explain yourself to so many people, so much of the time,” Heard wrote in the caption for the image.

“In this case, I’d like to remain more quiet. Although we have broken up, Elon and I care deeply for one another and remain close. Thank you for the continued support, respect, and privacy during these difficult, very human times.”

In a response to one follower, Heard said the story of her and Musk’s relationship was “taken from our hands and manipulated”, leaving her no choice but to address the break-up publicly.

Musk, 46, also weighed in on the comments section of Heard’s post.

“Although Amber and I did break up, we are still friends, remain close and love one another,” he wrote.

“Long distance relationships, when both partners have intense work obligations are always difficult, but who knows what the future holds,”

The celebrity pair went public with their relationship in July last year, but Musk was interested in Heard well before she split from her former husband, Johnny Depp, in May last year.

Musk first attempted to meet Heard in 2013, when he made a cameo appearance in her film Machete Kills, directed by Robert Rodriguez.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Musk emailed Rodriguez and asked him to set up a meeting.

“If there is a party or event with Amber, I’d be interested in meeting her just out of curiosity,” Musk wrote.

“Allegedly, she is a fan of George Orwell and Ayn Rand … most unusual.”

When Heard bailed on their first meeting, Musk persevered.

“Can you send her a note saying I would like to get together for lunch in LA?” he wrote in another email.

“Am not angling for a date. I know she’s in a long-term relationship, but … Amber just seems like an interesting person to meet.”
