Pop star Miley Cyrus has given a revealing new interview in which she details her new-found sobriety and explains how her life has mellowed out since her infamous 2013 MTV Awards performance.

Cyrus, who rose to fame on the Disney show Hannah Montana, created controversy when she debuted a provocative new look four years ago, alienating her young audience with overt sexual innuendo and drug references.

Now 24, the singer told Billboard magazine her wild ways are behind her and her new lifestyle is all about sobriety, clear-headedness and flying under the radar.

“I haven’t smoked weed in three weeks, which is the longest I’ve ever [gone without it]. I’m not doing drugs, I’m not drinking, I’m completely clean right now!” Cyrus told the magazine.

“I want to be super clear and sharp, because I know exactly where I want to be.”

Cyrus said she’s also toned down her signature look — which usually features plenty of bright colours, sparkles and partial nudity – in an effort to blend in with the locals in her neighbourhood of Malibu, California.

“I love talking to people, and I approach them in a normal, ‘Don’t treat me different, cause I’m not’ way. That’s what started this evolution for me, getting out of my Dead Petz phase,” she told the magazine.

“People stare at me anyway, but people stare at me a lot when I’m dressed as a f*****g cat.”

Part of Cyrus’s metamorphosis has involved getting back together with her fiance, Australian actor Liam Hemsworth, from whom she split in 2013.

“I needed to change so much,” Cyrus admitted. “And changing with someone else not changing like that is too hard. Suddenly you’re like, ‘I don’t recognise you anymore’. We had to refall for each other.”

Since reuniting, Cyrus and Hemsworth have moved back in together and live in Hemsworth’s Malibu property with their seven dogs and two pigs.

Cyrus, who was recently a judge on the US version of The Voice, is set to release a new single, Malibu, on May 11 – a song that’s apparently a love song dedicated to Hemsworth.

While she acknowledged she’s currently dating a “straight guy”, the singer identifies as gender-fluid and is an advocate for the LGBTQI community.

In recent months, she has been vocal in her opposition to US President Donald Trump, famously posting a video to her Facebook after his November election in which she sobbed and lamented Hillary Clinton’s loss.

“I like the way I think right now. But don’t Trump supporters like the way they think?” she told Billboard. “So I’ve also got to be open with the way I approach people with my opinions. That’s the only way to make real change. And it’s not because I want to sell records!”
