Actress Amber Heard has been attacked online for appearing in an anti-domestic violence video, with some viewers accusing Johnny Depp’s ex-wife of hypocrisy.

Heard and Depp endured an intensely acrimonious and public split after the actress accused the Pirates of the Carribean star of domestic assault early this year, a claim he vehemently denied.

It’s the first time Heard has spoken publicly about her relationship with Depp since the pair settled their divorce out of court in August.

In the video, Amber Heard Speaks Up, released by the Girl Gaze Project on Saturday, Heard discusses the difficulty of revealing her alleged assault to close family and friends and encourages other victims to speak out.

But viewers have lashed out at Heard, who in 2009 was charged with the domestic assault of her then-girlfriend, Tasya van Ree.

Heard appeared in court over the incident, but prosecutors dropped the charges as both women were residents of California, not Seattle where the alleged assault occurred.

‘I’m sure her victims feel the same way’

Angry comments flooded the video on the weekend.

“She was arrested for abusing her ex in public and now she’s playing the victim card?” demanded one user, whose comment was the most ‘liked’ on the page.

“You should have invested the divorce settlement in acting lessons,” wrote another.

On Twitter, one user simply posted Heard’s 2009 mugshot, in reference to her own brush with domestic violence.

Heard dated artist van Ree between 2008 and 2012, with the actress changing her name to Amber van Ree after the pair entered a legal ‘domestic partnership’.

The seven-year-old domestic assault charge against Heard was unearthed by entertainment site TMZ during Heard and Depp’s public war of words in 2016.

But in an interesting twist, Heard’s ex-partner came out in her defence, calling the incident “misinterpreted” and “over-sensationalised”.

“It is disheartening that Amber’s honesty and integrity are being questioned again,” wrote van Ree in a statement.

“Amber is a brilliant, honest and beautiful woman and I have the utmost respect for her.

“We shared five wonderful years together and remain close to this day.”

But it was clear a large number of viewers were not convinced Heard deserved to be a poster girl for the anti-domestic violence movement.

“This woman is beyond pathetic. She has been arrested for domestic violence. How can she be so fake?” wrote one commenter.

“I’m sure her victims feel the same way,” posted another.

Heard sued over nude scenes

Adding insult to injury, Heard is currently facing a $10 million lawsuit over accusations she conspired with the director of the upcoming film, London Fields, to edit out nude sex scenes she had filmed.

Based on a novel by Martin Amis, the film is a murder mystery and black comedy starring Billy Bob Thornton as a writer with hopeless writer’s block.

Lawyers for the producers have alleged Heard “refused to fulfil contractual obligations”.

“Heard understood the nature of the role … and the tenor of the screenplay, which was salacious, provocative, and contained nude scenes,” the lawsuit, published in The Telegraph, stated.
