French actress Marion Cotillard has been forced to make a statement about her relationship with Brad Pitt, after being blamed for his divorce from wife Angelina Jolie.

Her comments came shortly before the emergence of unverified reports that Pitt had been anonymously accused of being violent with one of his children, adding another dimension to the already messy break-up.

Cotillard met Pitt on the set of their upcoming movie Allied, which was filmed earlier this year in France, Spain and the United Kingdom.

After news broke that Jolie had filed for divorce from Pitt citing “irreconcilable differences”, fingers were soon pointing in Cotillard’s direction.

Given Pitt’s marriage to Jennifer Aniston ended because he fell in love with a talented, mysterious brunette on the set of a spy movie (Jolie in their 2005 film Mr and Mrs Smith), speculation was rife that Cotillard had stolen his heart.

However, Cotillard took to Instagram on Thursday to shoot down rumours Jolie had grown jealous of her relationship with Pitt in a fiery post.

“This is going to be my first and only reaction to the whirlwind news that broke 24 hours ago and that I was swept up into,” Cotillard said.

“I am not used to commenting on things like this nor taking them seriously but as this situation is spiraling and affecting people I love, I have to speak up.”

Cotillard, 40, used the post to announce she was expecting her second child with fellow French actor Guillaume Canet, 42, whom she has been dating since 2007.

“Firstly, many years ago, I met the man of my life, father of our son and of the baby we are expecting. He is my love, my best friend, the only one that I need,” Cotillard said.

“Secondly to those who have indicated that I am devastated, I am very well thank you. This crafted conversation isn’t distressing.

“And to all the media and the haters who are quick to pass judgment, I sincerely wish you a swift recovery.”

Cotillard concluded by addressing Jolie and Pitt’s split directly and wishing them both peace.

“Finally, I do very much wish that Angelina and Brad, both whom I deeply respect, will find peace in this very tumultuous moment,” she wrote, signing her statement, “With all my love Marion”.

Marion

The candid post was out of character for Oscar-winning Cotillard, who is notoriously private and avoids the limelight unless it’s to attend the premieres of her critically-acclaimed films.

In between shooting movies, she spends time raising her five-year-old son with Canet, Marcel, in their home in Paris.

Like Jolie, Cotillard is an activist, although she has admitted it’s hard to reconcile her environmentalism with her jet-setting lifestyle.

In a 2014 interview with The Guardian, she actually made reference to Jolie when speaking about the struggle to both help the world and pursue her career.

“Campaigning and acting aren’t compatible,” she said. “That’s why Audrey Hepburn gave up acting, that’s why Angelina Jolie will give up. I’m not ready to stop yet.”

After a film career spanning nearly 25 years, Cotillard is also no stranger to filming alongside famous men – she shot Inception with Leonardo DiCaprio and 2015’s Macbeth with Michael Fassbender.

Brad’s rowdy hotel stay

While Cotillard and Pitt might be just friends, this didn’t stop them and their film crew enjoying their time filming Allied in Europe.

At least, that’s if a review posted on travel advice site TripAdvisor is to be believed.

During Allied filming in Spain’s Canary Islands, Cotillard and Pitt stayed at local hotel the Santa Catalina – a five-star hotel in the city of Las Palmas – and a fellow guest said they caused quite the stir.

“Beware who’s staying in the hotel as I hit the exact time that Brad Pitt was in town to film his new film Allied and the whole of floor 3 and 4 floor  [sic] was taken up with all his film crew and entourage,” user debs1900 complained.

The disgruntled guest complained about Pitt holding a private pool party at the hotel, making it “very noisy until the early hours of the morning”.

“Don’t get me wrong I have every respect for Brad Pitt he is a fabulous actor but I would not choose to meet him nor stay in the same hotel as everyone has a right to privacy,” the guest said.

“The icing on the cake was the fact reception staff said I could go for a walk to see the pool area as I was hoping to use it the next day only to get removed, chucked out by security staff who said it was a private party.”

The guest concluded her review by warning others that filming was “apparently going on for 45 days” so “avoid at all costs”.
