Late music icon Prince left no instructions as to how his massive fortune should be divided in the event of his death, new court documents say.

An emergency petition filed by the 57-year-old’s sister Tyka Nelson reveals what many had speculated – that the superstar left no will and testament.

Prince passed away suddenly on April 22 (AEST) in his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota. He had no wife or children.

Nelson, Prince’s only surviving full blood relative, requested that his estate be handled by Bremer Bank, which previously handled the singer’s personal and business finances.

“I do not know of the existence of a will and have no reason to believe that the decedent executed testamentary documents in any form,” her filing states.

“Immediate action and decisions need to be made to continue the ongoing management and supervision of the decedent’s business interests,” according to the petition.

Prince’s fortune has been valued at over US$250 million, even without considering sales of his music following his death and the extent of his massive catalogue of songs, a large portion of which he kept hidden in a vault in his house.

Under Minnesota law, in the absence of a will and any immediate heirs, a person’s estate goes to the closest living relative.

In this case, that’s Nelson, although according to the filing Prince also has three half-brothers, two half-sisters and possibly several other unknown relatives.

“The decedent has heirs whose identities and addresses need to be determined,” it states.
