American celebrity news website TMZ is reporting Prince was treated for a drug overdose six days before his shock death.

The music icon passed away at the age of 57 from unknown causes early on Friday morning (AEST).

He was found unresponsive in an elevator at his estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

On April 16, less than a week before his passing, Prince’s private jet made an emergency landing in Illinois and he was rushed to hospital with what his reps claimed was the flu.

However, sources told TMZ he received a “save shot” from doctors, a treatment regularly used as an antidote to the effects of an opiate.

TMZ reported Prince was advised by doctors to remain in hospital but returned home when he was told he couldn’t have a private room.

Prince was a known Jehovah’s Witness, a religion which does not condone the use of drugs or excessive consumption of alcohol.

Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson has told a news conference that the investigation was ongoing, but “we have no reason to believe this was a suicide.”

An autopsy was completed Friday to determine what caused the death of the Purple Rain superstar, though officials said it could take days or weeks before results are released.

Prince was found unresponsive in an elevator at his Paisley Park compound in suburban Minneapolis and could not be revived, sheriff’s officials said.
