Actor Ben Affleck has announced his huge, colourful back tattoo is in fact a fake.

Affleck, who was photographed on the set of a film recently with massive orange phoenix rising from the ashes covering his entire back, has been the subject of ridicule ever since.

The actor’s ex-wife Jennifer Garner even joked about the tattoo in the latest issue of Vanity Fair, decreeing: “I refuse to be the ashes”.

But the star of Batman v Superman told Extra TV it was a “fake for a movie”, refusing to talk about it further.

“I actually do have a number of tattoos but I try to have them in places where you don’t have to do a lot of cover up,” he said.

“They get sort of addictive, tattoos, after a while.”

Affleck and Garner split last year amid allegations an affair between Affleck and their nanny, but Garner recently spoke highly of her ex.

“He’s the love of my life,” she told Vanity Fair.

“What am I going to do about that? He’s the most brilliant person in any room, the most charismatic, the most generous.”

Garner has also all-but-confirmed the nanny rumours.

“Bad judgment? Yes. It’s not great for your kids for [a nanny] to disappear from their lives,” she said.

But the former Alias star implied the affair happened after they split and had nothing to do with the divorce.

“She was not a part of the equation,” Garner said.
