Kate Winslet calls gender pay gap talk ‘vulgar’

Kate Winslet has weighed in on the discussion of Hollywood’s gender pay gap, saying she finds money talk “vulgar”.

The disparity between the salaries of male and female actors in big-budget films has been a hot topic recently.

Actress Jennifer Lawrence penned an essay for Lenny on the fact she received less money than her male American Hustle costars and just this week Sandra Bullock highlighted the problem of sexism in Hollywood.

However, 40-year-old Winslet is one celebrity who won’t be revealing the finer details of her finances.

“I’m having such a problem with these conversations,” Winslet revealed to BBC’s Newsbeat on Tuesday.

“I understand why they are coming up but maybe it’s a British thing. I don’t like talking about money; it’s a bit vulgar isn’t it?”

“I don’t think that’s a very nice conversation to have publicly at all.

“I’m quite surprised by these conversations to be honest, simply because it seems quite a strange thing to be discussing out in the open like that.”

Winslet said she personally had no reason to complain about her own salary, saying: “I am a very lucky woman and I’m quite happy with how things are ticking along.”

When asked if she had ever experienced sexism in her career, Winslet responded: “Honestly, no. And if I’d ever been in that situation I would have either dealt with it or removed myself from it. I find all this quite uncomfortable.”

“I haven’t ever felt that I’ve really had to stick up for myself just because I’m a woman.”
