In an unlikely turn of events, Kristen Stewart’s mother has been the one to speak out about her daughter’s long-rumoured bisexuality.

In an interview with The Sunday Mirror, Jules Stewart confirmed her 25-year-old daughter “loves women and men” and is currently dating her personal assistant Alicia Cargile.

“I’ve met Kristen’s new girlfriend, I like her,” Jules Stewart said. “What’s not to accept? She’s a lovely girl.”

“I feel like people need to be free to love whoever they want,” she continued.

“I accept my daughter loves women and men. It’s OK to be who you are in my world. We all choose our friends so we should be free to choose our lovers.

“People are good to do whatever they like as long as they’re not hurting people or breaking the law.

“I have gay friends, family members, I’m accepting of people, we are all free to choose who we want to love.”

Stewart’s mother’s comments are the first official confirmation of her relationship with Cargile, which has been rumoured since September 2014.

Prior to dating Cargile, Stewart dated boyfriend Robert Pattinson on and off for nearly four years after meeting him on the set of her breakout movie, Twilight.

The pair split in 2012 after Stewart was photographed kissing married director Rupert Sanders.

Pattinson is now engaged to singer FKA Twigs.

“I’m very sad that Kristen and Robert didn’t have a chance to be alone together, they had to have the whole world with them and all the public stuff ruined everything, life became overwhelming,” she said.
