With two of her daughters – Zahara, 10, and Shiloh, 8 – in tow, the 39-year-old hit the Kids’ Choice Awards on Saturday night.

The 39-year-old was presented with the ‘Best Villain’ award for her role in Maleficent, and used the moment to encourage young children to embrace being different.

“I want to say when I was little, like Maleficent, I was told that I was different—and I felt out of place, and too loud, too full of fire, never good at sitting still, never good at fitting in,” Jolie said.

“Different is good. So, don’t fit.

“Don’t ever try to be less than what you are, and when someone tells you that you are different, smile and hold your head up high and be proud.”

“Cause a little trouble, it’s good for you,” she added.

The family-friendly awards show marked Jolie’s first official public apperance since having major surgery.

In an op-ed for The New York Times on March 24, Jolie revealed that she had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed to reduce her risk of getting ovarian cancer.

The surgery means the Oscar-winner will be unable to have any more children of her own.
