Ben Quilty’s ‘Private Phil Butler’ is a portrait of a Vietnam War veteran turned homeless man who gained support from St John of God’s Hospital in Richmond, NSW. “Every second Wednesday, Phil has driven the five hours from Hill End to Richmond for his four-hour counselling session,” says Quilty. “There are eight men in the group, all of them conscripts from the Vietnam War and all suffering PTSD or depression or both.”
