Intense, ghostly piece wins 2014 Archibald

Fiona Lowry has won this year’s Archibald Prize for her portrait of architect Penelope Seidler.

The $75,000 award was announced on Friday at the Art Gallery of NSW.

Among the 54 finalists were Alan Jones’s portrait of AFL footballer Adam Goodes, Sophie Hewson’s depiction of herself kissing singer Missy Higgins and Tim Maguire’s double portrait of actress Cate Blanchett.

The Archibald exhibition opens to the public on Saturday.
